Quality System Procedure 13 – Calibration of Test Equipment

How important is this procedure?

What do you think could happen if our test equipment was not subject to regular checks to make sure it was operating correctly?

In a nutshell, this procedure is in place to guarantee client confidence that our test equipment is fit for purpose!

Responsibility lies with anyone carrying out a test to confirm in advance that the equipment they are about to use has been fully calibrated within the last twelve months.

The calibration date is stored here and a reminder notification is issued automatically to the equipment owner one month in advance of calibration renewal date.

A copy of each calibration cert is uploaded onto the database and can be viewed/downloaded from anywhere with internet access.

Some of the equipment linked to testing that requires calibration is listed below:-

  • Test gauges
  • Relief valves
  • Flue gas analysers
  • Test meters
  • Air compressors

Any hired test equipment or equipment belonging to a subcontractor must also comply and be calibrated. Copies of all relevant certs should be obtained and kept on file for transmittal with handover documents.

The majority of test equipment is calibrated annually, however this is at the discretion of the test equipment controller; based on frequent usage or any adverse results, calibration may be carried out more frequently to ensure compliance.

The cost of some test equipment (ie. Standard pressure test gauges) is low relative to the re-calibration cost for these items.

For this reason, these gauges are booked out to a site, used for twelve months and then replaced.
