System Improvement of PA Testing

A3 Problem Solving – No. JEG004

Issue:

Current PAT label printer is now obsolete. White labels mean date has to be visually checked prior to use, each time a new piece of equipment is picked up. (Not obvious at a glance the PA test is “in date”).

Background:

New PAT label printer gives opportunity to improve the process and synchronise with the system in use for safety and lifting gear. These are colour coded with tape once inspected to show they are “in date” and approved for use.

Current Situation:

All the PAT printers we have in the company at present only produce white or yellow labels which have to be physically read to see if the dates are valid.

Problem Analysis:

Why are we only using white or yellow labels?

Why are we wasting time trying to read labels?

Why are we wasting time through poor back-up services?

Why are we paying €40 for only 100 labels?

Why are new tools being sent to sites without being tested?

Target Condition:

The target condition is to agree a new printer type to be introduced to Jones Engineering with more flexibility of label type/colour and to be more economical.

Countermeasures:

Labels for new printer available in multiple colours, (red, green, blue and yellow).

Less time wasted checking labels.

Better visual management.

More economical,(€60 for 1000 labels).

New printer more readily available and has better back-up service.

Implementation Plan:

Use up stock of old labels first.

Phase in use of new PAT label printers.

New coloured labels allow improved visual management.

Match test period colours with safety and lifting gear colour Schedules.

New PAT equipment to be purchased for Coolquay depot.

All new plant to be tested and labelled before being delivered to site.

Results :

Time saved checking labels.

All plant and tools will be delivered to site ready for use.

Cost savings with more economical labels.

More efficient back-up service for printers.

Follow Up :

Collect metrics from personnel as part of regular PAT operation and confirm system has improved.

PA Testing being carried out in Coolquay by John, so all new tools and plant are tested and ready to use as soon as they arrive on site. This highlights the importance of all new tools being delivered to Coolquay before arriving on sites.
