The first LEAN Times of 2018, issue 59, we seen the value of a tidy workplace and how order affects productivity.
“A tidy workplace is a productive workplace. Not only does clutter set a bad impression for clients and visitors, it can be a distraction for your staff. A tidy workplace is not just about having tidy desks, and removing clutter from areas visited by clients, it should also include keeping any outdoor areas, staff rooms and even cupboards neat and tidy. “
In February the Lean Dept. took to the road and visited the project teams in Saudi Arabia. Several sites were viewed, including the new central hub for plant in the Riyadh Village Compound. Hilti On!Track training and Lean 101 classes were held for the project teams in Riyadh and Jeddah.
Issue 60 in February also showed us the innovative Taplock and O’Shea Electrical told us about Profibus, a single bus cabling system that can be used in lieu of traditional multicore cabling.
Along with the snow of March came Issue 61. Here the Project Team on the Takeda site in Grange castle showed us how they adopted Just-In-Time methods and applied Lean Thinking from lessons learned.
Construction Managers Tommy Darcy and Brian Hughes tell us:
“When pipe is sent to site, it is loaded neatly on custom built pipe racks and then lifted off in one operation. With the pipe being delivered like this, crew members don’t need to access the trailers to off load the pipe. (Previously on similar projects, pipe was arriving bundled in to trailers). This results in time being saved as pipe spools are neatly presented and labelled. Pipe supports are also being prefabricated and delivered in a similar fashion on custom built trolleys. These trolleys can be brought directly to the point of installation cutting down on transportation, inventory, motion and waiting wastes.”
