If you are like me and don’t have an electrical background, what would you think of when somebody told you that O’Shea Electrical are using Profibus?
It turns out that Profibus is short for Process Fieldbus and comprises of a single bus cabling system in lieu of traditional multicore cabling with field devices that can be introduced which enables consistent data exchange with a higher ranking communication system.
Profibus can be part of the plants backbone process communication system and with multiple profi-hubs in place within the plant it’s easy to add to the system without effecting the operation of the plant that at times can effect production and cost the client money.
From the client’s point of view, it’s an easier installation process and the termination method for the cables saves time.
It is also more reliable where you have multiple production based processes depending on the operation of it.
Profibus covers Factory & Process Automation with the same consistent communications protocol and enables mixed applications which are often seen in Pharmaceutical – Food or Beverage industries.
O’Shea Electrical are currently involved on the Biomarin site in Cork where working with Profibus forms a large part of everything they carry out within the existing facility.
Mark Archer manages the work on this project for O’Sheas and he was quick to realise that with some specific Profibus training his team would have a competitive edge over other contractors for future works.
Mark embarked on organising this training in the most cost effective and efficient way, by having the training take place on site, where the instructor was the only one who had to travel. A most cost effective way to train all his people without them leaving site. By using the same instructor who carries out training for the client’s staff, Mark was also making sure that the client would be aware of the extra efforts he was making to raise the level of expertise within his site team and ultimately provide a better service to the client.
Pictured above are some of O’Sheas core crew of Electricians & Instrument Technicians taking part in the on-site certified Profibus training course on Thursday 9th February.
Carried out by Dr. Hassan Yaghazchi of Profibus Ireland this course demonstrated both practical and theory assessments and will be extremely beneficial for our current and future Profibus projects on the Biomarin site.
